The Children and Youth Succeeding in School Committee promotes learning enrichment activities in Butler County’s three school districts. The importance of learning is inestimable. The committee hosts activities such as Math Count competitions in the fall, essay contests in the spring, and the Wheatley Succeeding in School Tutoring Program available in the summer and on Saturdays throughout the school year.

Wheatley -Succeeding in School Tutoring Program
The Children and Youth Succeeding in School Committee is a proud supporter of the Wheatley program. Wheatley - Succeeding in School Tutoring Program has encouraged over 1,000 students during it's nineteen-year existence at the Historic Wheatley School, 921 Garfield Street in Poplar Bluff. The program began in May 2004. The program met each of it's first fifteen years on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. During first year of COVID -19 pandemic, the program met three hours on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. -- 1:00 p.m. In 2021, the program continued Saturday tutoring and added a virtual component on Tuesdays and Thursdays upon request. Each Summer since 2010, Wheatley Tutoring has offered a one-month academic "Super Kids Camp" from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. This Summer the program will meet July 6 - July 28, 2023 from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The program is open to children in grades Kindergarten thru Sixth. Registration dates will be announced at a later date. Limit for program is fifty students. For more information call 573-776-5073.
Math Counts Competition
The Community Resource Council partners with the Children and Youth Succeeding in School committee as well as other partners to offer this fun math competition each year. This competition challenges 4th grade students in the Poplar Bluff School District on their multiplication speed and accuracy. The top 4 finalist from the competition meet at the Poplar Bluff Public Library for the finals. This is such an exciting event each year to help the students excited about school and math!
7th Grade Essay Contest
The Community Resource Council partners with the Children and Youth Succeeding in School Committee and other partners to offer an essay contest open to all 7th Graders in Butler County who attend participating schools. The essay winner is chosen by the Missouri Retired Teachers Association. The goal of this contest is to help get students excited about school and writing.

3rd Grade Spelling Bee
The Community Resource Council partners with the Children and Youth Succeeding in School Committee and other partners to offer the Spelling Bee to the 3rd Graders who attend Poplar Bluff Elementary Schools. Each week students will have to spell a number of words correctly to move to the next round. The final round will have one competitor from each of the 4 Elementary schools, and these students will compete live on the radio to become the 3rd Grade Spelling Bee Champion!
